The athletic program at Stratford High School provides the student-athlete with an opportunity to develop the qualities of self-discipline, commitment, teamwork, self-esteem and loyalty. The interscholastic sports program is an integral part of the entire high school experience. It is a privilege to participate in the athletics program, not a right! Therefore, our participants must be students and good citizens first and foremost.
Stratford High School has three sports season: fall, winter, and spring.
We are a member of the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) and the South-West Conference (SWC). The CIAC website is www.ciaccas.org and the SWC website is www.swc-ct.com.
Highlighting the 2009-2010 school year was Stratford High School’s CIAC Class L boy’s basketball state championship and a perfect 27-0 season. The Red Devils of Paul Dudzinski, voted the Madison Square Garden (MSG) Tri-State Coach of the Year, also won the SWC title. Stratford has won two state crowns (Class M in 2008 and a pair of SWC championships in the last three years. In 2008-2009 SHS compiled a perfect 20-0 regular season. The team featured two All-State players in center Brandon Sherrod and guard Russell Payton. Sherrod also was named Connecticut’s Gatorade Player of the Year.
In the spring, junior Tyler Figgis became only the second golfer in school history to earn All-State laurels as he finished seventh overall in the CIAC championship tournament. Three members of last fall’s football team earned all-state laurels. They were quarterback Jeff Miller, wide receiver Nick Riley, and defensive back Vinny Valente.
While many SHS teams received SWC Sportsmanship honors, the girl’s basketball team earned its first Swaffield Award, given annually for teams displaying outstanding sportsmanship by the Fairfield County Board 9 basketball referees.
